Sandcastles 2000

Every year those highly-intelligent, highly-trained people who design schools, homes, freeways, hospitals, and skyscrapers get together on Galveston island off the coast of Texas for a day of sand, sea, and a lot of beer. They call it the AIA Sandcastle Competition.

Run by the Houston chapter of the American Institute of Architects, this year's event was held Saturday, June third -- a perfect day weather-wise for blowing off some steam by playing in the sand.
75 teams, both professional and college, had six hours to turn sand into substance. What follows are the result of those efforts.
