As
children we are given Legos. We are given Lincoln Logs. Eventually
we progress to Erector Sets. But nothing compares to the primitive,
tactile pleasure of creating a sandcastle. Molding two of
the very elements of nature -- earth and water -- while battling
the other two -- sun and wind.
Every
year some of the most respected architects in the world strip
off their ties, throw building codes to the wind and get down
to the basics: sand, surf, and shovels in order to prove that
at their most fundamental level, humans are a race of builders.
And they also drink a lot beer.
This is
the result of those efforts. A sampling of the 80 entries
into the 2001 American Institute of Architects SandCastle
Competition. These aren't the official winners. But they're
the ones selected by Glass Steel and Stone as exemplary
entries based on aesthetics, social commentary, and satire.
