Description by Wayne Lorentz W hen completed, this building is intended to be the tallest in the world. Originally, it was the only skyscraper in the race for that title. But before it could even be topped out a number of other competitors announced plans to top it and a few even began construction. So its "world's tallest" title, while well-earned, may be brief.
The actual height of this building was a mystery for years. The people involved with the development and construction concealed its exact height to keep competitors guessing. Eventually a rumor slipped out that the goal was 818 meters (2,683 feet). It turned out to be true. When Samsung contractors placed a spire and a beacon on top of the building in late December, 2008 construction crews confirmed to local media that the spire reached the 818 meter height.
Dubai is no stranger to monumental skyscrapers, but this one sets a new standard. Aesthetically, the Burj Dubai is a brilliant shard of glass piercing the Arabian sky. It is formed by three main shafts arranged in a Y shape. Their setbacks taper in a spiral pattern until the Burj Dubai is merely a spire in the sky. In any city, this would be a monumental structure. On the flat plain of Dubai, it is a shock to behold, likely to be visible for miles and miles. One can only imagine the views possible from those living and working inside.
But this tower does not stand on its own. It is part of a planned 500-acre complex of offices, hotels, shops, lagoons, and public space that will be a technological, economic, and social oasis all on its own.
Architect: Adrian Smith
Developer: Emaar Properties
The foundation is made up of 192 concrete and steel pilings more than 164 feet (50 meters) deep. They are joined by a 12-foot-thick raft upon which the skyscraper rests.
45,000 cubic meters of concrete was used in the foundation.
The hotel in the Burj Dubai is going to be an Armani-branded hotel. In keeping with Islamic custom it will have separate hours for women and men at the pool.
The footprint of this building is in the shape of a hymenocallis, a desert flower native to the area.
According to an interview in Construction Week, the air conditioning chillers installed on the 155th and 159th floor are so high that their design had to take into account the thinner air at that elevation.
This building has about 30 setbacks.
Underground parking spaces: 16,000
January, 2004: Construction begins.
20 September, 2004: The first concrete is poured for the foundation.
26 June, 2005: Gulf News reports that the estimated total cost for the Burj Dubai complex rises to US$5,500,000,000.
16 July, 2005: ;Construction Week magazine reports that the designers of the Burj Dubai are reconsidering their decision to use stainless steel on the exterior of the tower because prices have jumped from US$400 a ton to $2,200 in just two years.
March 23, 2006: The Associated Press reports that 2,500 construction workers rioted because of low pay and poor treatment doing an estimated US$1,000,000 damage. Thousands of construction workers at other Dubai projects also went on a sympathy strike.
April 16, 2006: AME Info reports that the Burj Dubai is going to be at least 200 stories tall, a number that turns out to be false.
September 1, 2006: Construction reaches 70 stories.
October 1, 2006: Construction reaches 75 stories.
October 31, 2006: Construction reaches 80 stores and 850 feet / 259 meters. That height makes it taller than the tallest building in Europe.
November 11, 2006: ITPBusiness reports that construction is being delayed by a shortage of exterior cladding material.
April 6, 2007: The tower reaches a record-breaking 120 stories.
July 21, 2007: This building passes Taipei 101 as the tallest building on Earth.
August 12, 2007: Passes 1,730 feet in height -- higher than the antennae atop the former Sears Tower in Chicago.
August 29, 2007: Passes the CN Tower in Toronto to become the world's tallest free-standing structure.
September 3, 2007: Passes 1,772 feet in height -- higher than the Ostankino Tower in Moscow.
May, 2008: This building passes the KVLY Television tower in North Dakota to become the tallest man-made object on Earth.
May 20, 2008: A worker is crushed to death by an exterior panel.
May 24, 2008: A British man parachuted off of the Burj Dubai just days after it rose to a height making it the tallest man-made structure ever built. He managed to sneak past security guards and walk up more than 150 stories of stairs with all of his gear without being noticed.
June 17, 2008: Arabian Business reports that the height of this building has been increased by planners, but remains secret.
October, 2008: This building reached 2,257 feet, making it taller than the demolished Warsaw Radio tower in Poland, formerly the tallest man-made structure ever to exist.
December, 2008: The spire is erected at the top of this building, giving it its full height.
December 30, 2008: Original scheduled completion date.
January 17, 2009: Building topps out at 2,684 feet.
July 12, 2009: Zawya reports that the opening of this building will be delayed three months until December 2, 2009.
November, 2009: The opening date was pushed back to January 4, 2010.
When this building opened, its interior was decorated with more than 1,000 original works of art.
Quotations
"The tower design created by celebrity architect Adrian Smith for Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill is inspired from the geometrics of the desert flower and the patterning systems employed in Islamic architecture. It combines these historical and cultural influences with cutting-edge technology to achieve a high performance building which will set the new standard for development in the Middle East and become the model for the future of the city of Dubai." - Robert Booth, Executive Director, Emaar Properties.
"The tower goes up in steps in a spiralling way. In Islamic architecture, this symbolises ascending towards the heavens." - Architect Adrien Smith, Turkish Weekly, August 10, 2005.

Rating: Four stars. Its a brilliant design and I think its longevity is unknown. the design is almost the best (a cone) but looks better. I hope the construction materials have satifactory strength. It gave a lot of people work and wages and they could have been paid more but there would have been fewer people employed. You win some, you lose some. Anyway its a great building and I hope to get there some day.

Rating: Five stars. It absolutely thrills me to see that in other parts of the world when someone has an idea and the shear guts to make it happen nothing stops them. Unfortunately in the USA everyone has to have a say before the foundation can be poured; and at times it seems as though too many people can have an opinion. But enough of that, I love this building and I check in quite frequently to see its progress. I hope to someday travel to Dubai and see it in person. I hope it can hold the record for tallest structure long enough for the people of Dubai to enjoy. Congradulations, it truly is an architectural marvel.

Rating: One star. I find it interesting and frankly boring that people get wrapped up in this structure. The culture of Dubai has no discipline that is required to come up with such a structure. Designed by Chicago Architecture firms, (as are most buildings in Dubai) Dubai's prince is simply using American technology and know how, exploiting workers to build these empty buildings, and hoping people come to visit. No way. The human rights violations in Dubai run deep and this city cares nothing for the environment. Big deal, a prince had some money threw at a project, hired American architects and engineers and built himslelf a bunch of empty buildings. Dubai is no place that is even on my radar. This city is smaller than my current city of Jacksonville FL. A cool building in an abhorent part of the world. Thanks, but no thanks.

this and all the buildings like are built from the slave labor of Asian migrants. they make up about 80% of the total population, are forced to live in walled-up slums, and have basically no rights. i wish i could warn Sheikh Mouktum that Dubai is expanding too fast for its own good and that this city is proliferated by segregation and oppression.

Rating: Five stars. this is the most amazing structure that i have ever seen and it is not even completed, i am looking forward to the completion of the Burj Dubai, so that i can at least see it on the internet. i will not be able to afford to see it, other than this way but i can always dream that i would be dancing in the Armani ballroom and looking over all the architectural achievements of Dubia from the observation deck. i was "blown away" so to speak by how it is designed to have the airflow go up the building in a spiral, i would assume even adding to the strength of the structure as opposed to creating force against it. pure genius. to all of you who are involved in this monumental project, my sincere congratulations.

Dubai looks completely ridiculous and unsustainable, much like our extravagant desert cities, Las Vegas and Phoenix. This is a real monument to folly and the loss of foresight and reason. Rating: Five stars. While i can appreciate the beauty and feat of engineering this structure, the more i see of dubai, i see a fake facade of fancy buildings but a city with no real beauty. What happens when the money dries up and age takes it toll on this city, will it really stand the test? At the end of the day do we need 1km high buildings to marvel at when there are people starving, and dying from disease just from lack of water. I think helping something like that would me a more remarkable feat.
TJ

The beauty of this structure is tainted for me, knowing that it was built on the blood and sweat of exploited workers from India and Pakistan who were paid virtually nothing and treated like animals. Designed and engineered by a foreign company and built by imported workers - where is the glory in this for Dubai?

Rating: Five stars. I viewed a television broadcast in Canada about the tower and its construction/engineering workforce. It gets so hot in the daytime the workers have to take the mid day (noon) hours off, but then will resume work even all night as the concrete will only set properly during the cooler night hours. They continually moved the workers lunch room to higher and floors so the workers dont have to go all the way down its many floors! Just incredible worker management and building engineering. Really enjoyed viewing the Dubai hospitality to the workers!
