W hen completed, this will be one of the most important buildings of the early 21st century. It is significant in stature, in design, in its politics, its symbolism, and for the reason it was built.

The Freedom Tower is the replacement for what was once New York's World Trade Center. In September, 2001 terrorists destroyed several of the Center's buildings, including the massive 110 -story twin towers. The stated reason for this action was to protest the United States' support of the nation of Israel and its people. The terrorist attack only served to solidify the bond between the U.S. and Israel, and caused wars in Afghanistan and elsewhere, and the toppling of the Taliban government in Afghanistan. Thousands died when the twin tower fell, and millions were emotionally and psychologically scarred.

The Freedom Tower is more than a real estate project. It is rehabilitation for those hurt by the terrorists and a way to heal the scar on a nation. Part of the healing process is new growth, which this tower represents. But it has been a painful process. The early designs were ridiculed. When the first cohesive plan came out of the pack it, too, found slews of detractors. New Yorkers are notoriously cranky people and they took aim at the design. Most had forgotten, or were too young to remember, that the original twin towers were also the subject of much vitriol for their design and expense. It was only after those towers were taken away that the city realized it had grown to love its pair of white albatrosses. But detractors stalled the project for more than a year, adopted celebrity real estate mogul Donald Trump as their mouthpiece, and embarrassed the city and the nation by allowing the United Arab Emirates to begin work on what would become the world's tallest tower while New Yorkers were busy sticking their thumbs in each other's eyes.

The current design is much less flashy than the previous one. It is something like a large sloping block with the corners carved off, so it appears that the entire building twists as it gets higher. The building's faces will be huge triangles that taper toward the top and the bottom. At the center of the building, they will form an octagon. The skyscraper is symmetrical. Asymmetry was something in the last design that set a lot of people off. Some people also don't appreciate the spire at the top. They forget that the Twin Towers had a spire, too, and the mast is necessary for communications transmitters.

The new Freedom Tower will pay homage to the twin towers in several ways. The base of the Freedom Tower will be 200 feet square -- the same dimensions as the original towers. The observation deck will be at 1,362 feet: the heigh of World Trade Center Tower Two. The glass parapet will be at 1,368 feet: the height of World Trade Center Tower One.

That square base is a safety measure, not just an engineering method. Though it will be clad in glass prisms, the 186-foot-tall base will be a windowless concrete wall, intended to absorb and deflect the blast from car or truck bombs. The glass prisms will be coated with plastic like automobile safety glass to help absorb the impact. It is hoped that the prisms will refract light into color and make the monolithic security measure an eye-pleasing curiosity. The Twin Towers were targeted by Islamic terrorist truck bombs twice, once successfully in 1993, before they were destroyed by terrorists in jets in 2001. The corners of the base will taper inward, with small reflecting pools at ground level.

The Freedom tower is just one of several buildings that will be erected to compose the new World Trade Center. The design is officially known as "Memory Foundations" because it leaves room for several memorials in the 16-acre complex. One of those memorials is the slurry wall, more commonly known as "the bathtub." This structure was the basement of the World Trade Center and served to hold back the Hudson River to keep it from flooding the complex. It was here that the remains of thousands of dead were found, and hundreds more who were never found. People will be able to walk down a ramp from ground level all the way down to bedrock along the edge of this wall -- the last original remaining piece of the twin towers.

  • Sculptor Kenneth Snelson is working on the spire at the top of the building.
  • The glass prisms at the base will each be 13-feet tall.
  • The base of the tower will be 186-feet tall.
  • The base of the tower will be 200-feet by 200-feet.
  • The top of the tower will be 145-feet by 145-feet.
  • The shaft of the tower will be 1,182 feet tall.
  • The main structure will be topped by a 408-foot-tall mast containing antennae. The base of the mast will be surrounded by a 145-foot wide ring containing more equipment.
  • The trees surrounding the Freedom Tower will be sweetgum trees.
  • The corner cutaways are each 186 feet tall. The Twin Towers also had chamfered corners.
  • The building tapers inward at an angle of 3.8 degrees. The chamfers taper outward at the same angle, resulting in a 16-foot overhang.

  • Floor space: 2,600,000 square feet.
  • Height to roof: 1,368 feet -- the same as to the roof of the old 1 World Trade Center
  • Height to tip of spire: 1,776 feet - the same as the year of the nation's declaration of independence.

  • 29 May, 2003 - The New York Times reports that the Metropolitan Television Alliance has signed a deal to put as many as 22 antennae on top of Freedom Tower. The World Trade Center was home to many of New York's television and radio transmitters until the attacks of September 11, 2001. The Freedom Tower will be the new home to TV channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 28, 30, 31, 36, 38, 40, 41, 44, 45, 47, 53, 56, 61, and 68.
  • 17 July, 2003 - Architect David Childs is chosen to design the Freedom Tower.
  • 4 July, 2004 - Groundbreaking. A 20-ton granite slab is used as the cornerstone of the project. It is inscribed with the words "To honor and remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and as a tribute to the enduring spirit of freedom. - July Fourth, 2004."
  • 9 November, 2004 - An architecture student sues the designers of the Freedom Tower. He claims the building was copied from his design for a skyscraper intended to be part of New York's 2012 Olympic bid.
  • 16 December, 2004 - The World Trade Center victims memorial is revised. The new plan includes a Memorial Hall between the reflecting pools that will mark the footprints of the former World Trade Center. It will also include a grove of oak trees with a clearing for memorial services, and public access to the stumps of the columns that once held the Twin Towers aloft. The memorial is expected to cost US$500,000.00 and be completed by 2009.
  • 3 May, 2005 - U.S. Senator Charles Schumer warns that the Freedom Tower project is in jeopardy. He notes that the steel has yet to be ordered, and claims that critics are being given too much attention, preventing the start of real construction. At the same time, the New York Timesreports that Kevin M. Rampe has quit as project leader.
  • 29 June, 2005 - Amid much criticism from celebrity real estate moguls and the general public, a new design is released for the Freedom Tower.
  • April 27, 2006 - 21 months after the cornerstone was laid, it is announced that construction has formally begun on the Freedom Tower. The work was delayed because of disputes between the developer, Larry Silverstein, and the land owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The New York Timesnotes, however, that work actually began quietly a few weeks earlier while the two sides were still hammering out the details. Those details include a total of five buildings to be erected on the site of the World Trade Center, all to be completed by 2011. Mr. Silverstein gives up control of the Freedom tower to the Port Authority in exchange for control of more lucrative property in the complex. He will also pay higher rent.
  • June 27, 2006 - The design of the Freedom Tower is revised once again. The 186-foot-tall podium upon which the tower rests will now be covered by a screen of glass prisms, hiding the concrete base that has been often criticized for being too brutalist.
  • June 28, 2006 - The New York Timesreports that the Freedom Tower will have a sky lobby on the 64th floor. This is a controversial move because so many people died in the 78th-floor sky lobby waiting for elevators when 2 World Trade Center collapsed. The sky lobby in the Freedom Tower was necessitated by the June, 2005 design revision which decreased the building's footprint and restricted the amount of space available for elevator shafts.
  • April 18, 2008 - Pope Benedict XVI blesses the ground where the World Trade Center's twin towers once stood.
  • April 18, 2008 - WINSreports that a homeless man found two sets of confidential blueprints for the Freedom Tower in a trash can. He turned them over to the New York Post.
  • May 17, 2008: Structural elements start to climb above street level.
  • June 30, 2008: The Wall Street Journal reports that reconstruction of the World Trade Center could take 1-3 years longer and cost $1-$3 billion more than expected.
  • July 24, 2008: Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church agrees to sell its property next to the World Trade Center to the Port Authority for $20 million. The sale will give construction crews more space to work in and help speed construction of the Freedom Tower and other parts of the World Trade Center. The church building was destroyed in the terrorist attacks.
  • October, 2008: A report from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey indicated a revised completion date of 2013.
  • January 14, 2009: NY1 reported that the foundation of this building was completed.
  • March 25, 2009: The Beijing Vantone Industrial Company became the first company to lease space in this building. It signed a 23-year lease for floors 64 through 69.
  • March 27, 2009: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey came under fire for trying to eliminate the name "Freedom Tower" and only use this building's mailing address of 1 World Trade Center as its name.
  • August 4, 2009: The New York Daily News reported that the completion date of this building was pushed back to 2018.
  • November 18, 2009: Construction of this building reached the fourth floor.

  • The building will be partially powered by 12 hydrogen fuel cells. They are expected to generate 4.8 megawatts of power for the Freedom Tower and other buildings in the World Trade Center.

Rebuilding (better and safer) is the boldest statement to be made. The "Reflecting Absence" design says we dare not occupy that space in the sky again - an admission of defeat.

The height is fine, the building is okay, a good tribute. However, I dislike the hollow top portion. The building just doesn't seem whole.

I must admit at first i did not want to see anything more then maybe a wall built in the towers place but now i must say this i am a new yorker all though not currently there since my husband is in the service and currently in iraq. I think this building is a big mistake although i give it two stars just because of the "wedge of light" and the "bath tub"... building bigger to prove something to terrorists come on folks why do we need to prove anything to them we are kicking their butts already. I think we should build TWIN TOWERS!!! granted they should not look the same i think that would be a slap in the fact to all those lost kinda like saying here we can just replace what was lost but i do think it should be TWIN TOWERS. a reflective pool would be wonderful and yes if you are going to build something that tall all of it should be accessable and of course built with all of the safetly precautions. I just don't like the idea if that is how it will be of a glass building that is not NEW YORK to me. I would love to see the Twin Towers rebuilt maybe in a similar fashion to what they were but add a park where children can play while families of lost ones can reflect and visit if they wish to and a reflective pool showing the old towers. People need to stop trying to change New York and accept it for what it is a beautiful place this building does not fit into New York in my opinion. New York is the heart and soul of the great USA lets keep it that way

I don't think this structure even deserves a rating. It's absolutely pathetic!! Is there a competition in the world that I'm unaware of......the country with the tallest building wins? Any structure can be taller by mounting an antenna on the top. I do, however, appreciate some of his ideas. The memorials will be a great way to honor those that we lost....especially the "Wedge of Light." Sometimes bigger isn't always better. Whether or not the building 1,776 or 176 feet tall, isn't going to make a bit of difference....we will still be "One Nation Under God" & Growing stronger everyday. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I like the design, but I don't think it fits in well with its surroundings. I guess it's something that will grow on us though, in 20 years time it'll be hard to imagine New York looking any other way.

New super buildings have gone up around the world, taiwan, malaysia, the middle east. They all blend strength with regional beauty. Now we are saddled with a short ugly building with a tv antenae and wind farm and we are suppose to be excited? 2000 feet sounds impressive, until you realize it is all antennae... there are lots of taller antennaes out there, and many buildings that go past 70 stories. I think the only message this building sends is we are too scared to go higher. So the terrorists have made a chink in our culture.

I like the idea of constucting a monument for the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Although, like it is said above, it is just another hazard to the citizens of New York. I mean, a two steel towers could get destroyed easily and destroy parts of buildings and not many citizens, but construct one glass tower that is very easily breakable, could really hurt the citizens of New York more than the buildings around it is a horrid thing to imagine. I just hope that the attacks stop and America becomes the proud and worthy woman and country she is intended to be. Thank-you.

As an architect, i'ld to congratulate Daniel Liebskind for his Monumental design, but i also want to say that although NY was a city with no historical backgroung (comparing to European Cities Like Paris, London, Rome ....), He has commited the same mistake that all the architects who went for the ground zero competition did. In fact building the tallest building in the world isnt the solution, nor the answer to the attrocity of the attack. That terrorist attack made all people equal in fear and pain, so liberating them from all that pain wouldnt be by going higner than the previous "cause of pain"

Absolutely a perfect picture of freedom. This building reflects not only what the world lost that day but what thw world looks foward to, a future of Freedom. Like the Statue of Liberty, this building will house the hopes and dreams of the free world along with the countless that have made pilgramage to NY to not only pay respect to the ones we lost on 9/11 but also to see how the new future will be taller and bolder than our past, we must never forget what happened but in the same token, we cant let it harm our future. I look foward to seeing you all on the opening day of our beloved freedom tower. God bless you all

I think it is a magnificent stucture. Of course, it will take awhile to get use to, and it is obviously very different from the rest of the New York skyline; But don't let that get in the way of you disrespecting the arcitects. One thing I would change, is what many of you have already agreed on, and that is that you can not go all the way to the top, that is a disappointment, because it doesn't humanize it - I like it being made of glass, because it gives the horrible rememberance of 9/11 a sparkling, angelic feel to it, and respects my favorite landmark, the Statue of Liberty. But it is a symbol, a beautiful symbol, not of our American "ego", but of our deep and loving American pride. Love New York, love America.

Well, there're so many comments above. I think it wouldn't be fair to be so stubborn about our ideas. As one of the comments says, a common understanding can be set up through mutual compromises. Yeah, it's nearly impossible to satisfy so many people, especially in this matter. But something has to be done. What I know for sure is that every idea is better now than any delay. So, how can a common reconciliation be reached? In my wiev, firstly those who had to endure the biggest pain must be taken into account. They must be listened to. I liked the tower as I liked the former one. In fact, I'm inclined to love everthing america "does". So, I can't say I'm impartial. As a turkey-born immigrant, I value the idea of freedom more than many, so I'm thankful such a name was choosen. Pray for my being there on the day of opening. The flag on the left side isn't the one I respect. When looking from here, it2s clear that The Freedom Tower will become a monument as deeply rooted in the American mind as the Statue of Liberty. Just be patient and give yourself some time. God blessed America.

I think it is beautiful. Looks like the building is pointing straight to heaven, and when the sun hits it, the glow the top would give off would be more beautiful then anything in the world. And the "Wedge of Light" is a brilliant idea, brings tears to my eyes. And its not like the terrorists have won because they changed the skyline view of NY, we have just made something more beautiful and glowing to put in its place to remember those who died.

The twin towers will stand forever as a symbol in American history, there is no denying that. However, from a design perspective, they were relatively simple and plain. Regardless, they were still well constructed. This new building has a true sense of style. It does look weak, but don't be fooled by its exterior, it has an enormous support column that will render it even more sound than the original twin towers. This tower will stand as a symbol of American progress and resolve.

In response to the above comment...why not build a taller and more iconic structure? People didn't want the same footprint used for two new towers because of issues with leaving a memorial so some compromises had to be made by all sides. Having a blind and uneducated viewpoint on everything will not get you very far in life. The face of New York WAS changed by terrorists and the only way to move on is to stick it in their face and make the tallest and most ambitious attempt that America is capable of. To all those people who commented above about fears of a new taller building being a safety issue, why don't you read up on the subject first? The first 70 floors are occupied by office and it will the safest place to work in all of New York when completed. I would proudly work in this building and know that thousands of others will when it is complete in 2009. By the way Bobby, it is "you're" not "your" you flaming troll.

This tower is beyond crap! Your practically allowing terrorists and the world to change the face of one of our great cities. What if the Empire State Building or the Chrysler Buildng fall? Are we going to build two more "Freedom Towers" too? It's ridiculous we are changing the face of New York because of terrorists. If the World Trade Center was built STRONGER again, people would be even more proud to be an American, showing that we "got back on the horse" instead of getting a new one. The only way people are going to understand that building this tower is a mistake is if it comes crashing down.

I was born in the city. I have lived in Brooklyn all my life, and on 9/11, I was afraid, like any other person with a soul. When our great nation seemed to rise from the ashes, though, I knew that we would never be taken down. The new and stunning Freedom Tower has what it takes to be a New Yorker. i don't see why it would disrespect the ones lost- I can't imagine us not building on the site. New York City, if anywhere, is by far the most fitting and deserving place to house the tallest and most magnificent structure in the world.

Some of the comments I read I found appalling. It was obvious none of them read the article before posting so that they could understand the meaning of the buildings. If they had taken the 5 minutes to read the article they could have had more of a heart towards these new buildings. As an architect, as a poet I find you people rather revolting and rude for your comments and not making an effort to understand this new creation. What libeskind is doing is far more than miraculous. He is creating art, he is creating a place for everyone’s heart to feel at home for the tragedy, and he is most certainly not desperate. He is setting a new standard for a new century of designs for buildings. Libeskind is more than any of you could imagine because he is revolutionary. This man created something so beautiful, so great, and so unbelievably wonderful on paper and you can't appreciate that. I don't care who you are but it's hard enough for artists to get appreciation for their work these days, but for you to criticize his masterpiece like that without reading the story behind it all. Where is your patriotism if you can't appreciate what he is doing for the world and those who were lost in those vicious attacks? We are not here to separate ourselves but to come together as one and stand tall for our freedom!

The freedom tower is a brilliant design and anyone who says otherwise is an incompotent fool. The whole point of a tall building is to be a huge patriotic memorial reaching for the sky telling terrorists that america is not going to be intimidated. Building a bunch of small office buildings is admitting defeat. Likewise, using ground zero to create a small park or small memorial is letting the terrorists know that we are weak and easily intimidated into changing the way we think about buildings and how we live. Creating an exact replica of the old trade center buildings would be an insult to those who lived, worked and died there. It is almost as if the original buildings were never destroyed. I think the architects have done a wonderful job on the freedom tower and nothing could be a more fitting building to go in place of the old trade center towers.

The structure of the new Freedom Tower is nice, but I believe that they should have rebuilt the original towers. They could have made them more fancier, taller, and stronger. Also it should be the law that all sky scrapers should be "NO FLY ZONES". This is the only protection thats availabe to prevent another 911. God Bless Everyone.

I think that only 70 stories is leaving something to be expected...like 40 more floors!!! Not being able to stand on the top and see the surrounding view is not acceptable. Is this just in case it gets crashed into again? If we are goind to build a building to replace the towers, it should be MORE of everything, not less. Just being able to claim the tallest building in the world status is not enough if you can't use the top portion of the structure. I am glad we are replacing the towers with another taller structure, but let's make it better than the before.

Would they want us to just leave the site alone, do a little memorial, or would they want something grand rebuilt in their honor? Sorry I just don't think a little park gets it done the same way this monument does. If I was in that building and perished I would want this country, the greatest country on this planet, to rebuild. The building itself is interesting in design, but how does it show anything more than artistic lisence? Now it will be one large spike, meant to provoke more hatred for us. Look, you destroyed our buildings, and now to fill the space of all the dead loved ones we lost, we build something larger and gaudier. I mean, this is the reason we are attacked (physically and audibly) in the first place. We are a material nation, who has no self pride, we can only feel good about ourselves by "showing everyone else" what we are about. We shouldn't need that. We should have pride in who we are, and what we are about, without having to prove it to others all the time. The person with the biggest mouth is always heard, but seldom liked. Is that what we want for ourselves?

Considering the destruction of the old World Trade Center in 2001 and the fear it caused, I think this new building design is daring. I like the lower part of the building, but the upper part of the building looks weak and empty. It sends a message saying that our country is too afraid to construct a new building that has floors all the way to the top. I think it's remarkable that such a tall tower is being built and that any towers are being built on the 16-acre site, considering that many people wanted the entire site to be a memorial, not just the footprints of the original Twin Towers. The new building looks great, but it would look much better if there wasn't an empty space on top.

For all of the symbolism behind this project, I give 2 thumbs way up. Build it Bigger and Better I say. As long as it's not for Political gain. I just don't think this design completely does it. Why leave the top one-third mostly empty except for Wind-Turbines that will only generate 20% of the building power? Also, with the vacant, empty look at the top, the building looks weak and fragile. It should look STRONG, SOLID and ICONIC. I love the shape and style of the design, just not the hollow look of the top portion. As far as I'm concerned build it as tall as possible so it will ALWAYS be the Tallest Building!! Forever reminding people of what happened at that location on that time and date. The Wedge of Light Concept is also an outstanding reminder. Americans should never settle for Mediocrity, but I think that the reason and purpose for the symbolism in this project is being overshadowed by the compromises being done by the 2 men in charge of this project. Let the families of the victims have a definite say in the final design. That would be the ultimate memorial.

This should give some sort of commom ground instead of a symbol of power. Our power should be in our promise of "Freedom in America".September 11 should be remembered for heros not the people who caused it, why should those who caused it get anymore attention. I'm disappointed. The Twin Towers were iconic, but these just look like stacks of ice. It doesn't appear that trying to fit in with the current surroundings has featured in the design brief at all. I don't like the fact that the top third is basically just for looks. It may be tall, but with fewer stories and no observation deck, it seems to have a bit less soul to me. I think it would be a much more powerful statement if we just built them right back the way the were (with improvements to the internal structure obviously). All that aside, it's a decent design. As far as buildings go, I guess it's a nice one, although the top simply looks like it's incomplete. The 1776 feet idea is very patriotic and all that jazz, but so is everything else the USA does. Instead of building this to declare America's strength, why not go a different way and build something a bit more humble, but with a message that reflects those who died on 9/11? For once, show the world that the USA isn't all about the ego. Tone it down and make this a monument to the people, not of the country.

I have always felt the twin towers should rise from their own ashes, just as we as a nation rose from our own ashes from the civil war and the war of 1812. Many men have died fighting for the freedom of ALL people, no matter what color or creed. What happened on 9/11 was an act of war and should be thought of as such. The twin towers were a symbol of our strength and pride as a nation. A nation built on Christian beliefs, but one that also feels everyone should be able to worship God (or whatever name he goes by in other religions)as they choose. If we do not rebuild the twin towers we will be showing the rest of the world that the terrorists have won and succeeded in breaking our pride and the backbone of this fine nation.

I've never seen a more ridiculous looking building in my life. Two proud, majestic towers once stood at ground zero, the symbols for the modern day New York. These towers are being replaced with a less significant building that has scaffolding on top of it. The height of the new "tower" is insignificant because is not a true building. It's a cheap way to attain "tallest in the world" status. Can visitors can go to the top of it? This "building" is not as awesome or as inspirational as the twin towers were. If you really want to honor the victims of 9-11, rebuild the towers using today's technology, or build something even more grand in their place (along with a fitting memorial to the victims at the base of the buildings). This is not a fitting memorial, the terrorists scored a victory if New York goes ahead with these plans. Whenever America has faced adversity before, it has come back bigger and stronger, but these buildings will be smaller and less important than what once stood at ground zero.

I think the design is magnifciant! I must say though it seems that it will just be another attraction for others to try to destroy and you want to make something more of a memorial or in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11. My brother-in-law was in Iraq for over a year and a half as a result of this tragidy and I have American Pride and Spirit, but I also believe that we could have come up with some design that would have truely HONORED those we lost AND those who continue to fight as a result of the incident. NO design will REPLACE Twin Towers and I think it's a shame that we have to put something in its place and believe that is DISRESPECTFUL to those we lost!!

I gotta go with Greg, above. That big empty space at the top seems like a slap in the face to part of what made the Towers what they were in the first place. And, while we're on the subject, why isn't TowerS...PLURAL? Wouldn't THAT be a fitting replacement for what was lost? There was a lot of talk of what the new buildings should be like, a lot of "people won't go in buildings over 70 stories anymore" and all that crap. This big empty top spot at the top of the building is just politicans pandering to what they think people are afraid of - going up in tall buildings. What people are REALLY afraid of is that 9/11 will happen all over again.

I do not like the image of the freedone tower replacing the twin towers. The Freedom tower has changed so much from it's original conception that it is now an ugly compromise between two egotistical designers. I feel the ONLY way to honor the dead from 9/11 is to rebuild what they died for - Twin Towers as presented on the teamtwintowers.com site. Are we trying to "replace" or "rebuild" the NYC skyline? Rebuilding the twin towers is the ONLY way to "rebuild" the skyline.

Although it will be in theory the tallest building at the time of its construction, people will not be at the very top. They can only go up 70 stories. In the original towers there was 40 extra stories each. So where the people can be is significantly lower than the original towers and many other skyscrapers from around the world. I think that in itself is a great additional safety feature. I'm not sure if the buildings are made out of glass, or if the models were simply designed that way to show the new buildings incomparison to the buildings already standing there, so I cannot comment. I personally think the new design of the building symbolizes the beginning of a new era and find it very fitting. I do not understand why the tower needs to have such a tall rod on it, and that is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The wedge of light idea is awesome.

I don't get it!!? Is it essential that we build the "tallest" building in the world? In my opinion it is ostentatious and gaudy(if not downright hideous). Am I the only one who thinks it is absolutely disrespectful to the thousands who had to jump out of 110 story windows to their deaths, to rebuild something that is even higher and more dangerous than the one that collapsed before it? What is this architectural obsession with creating the tallest building in the world (even when it means risking the lives of so many)? Anyone who convinces themself that it is going to be any safer than the twin towers or that the risk of disaster is any less than before, is just delusional.

A terrific design that is unique. I am a New Yorker and I saw the WTC burn. This is a perfect building. It shows that the U.S. will always triumph over the evils of this world. God Bless America!!! This makes me even prouder to be an Aamerican!!

initally i wanted the original twin towers back ..... I belive this could be better , the original design lacked usable and intresting public outdoor areas , this will have that , also the spire of light is a unique design intigration . lets build it , taller , stronger , prouder , and invite the world to see her . lets open arms , open our hearts , and show the world that we are unique because new york is truly a slice of all humanity , a pice of all nations ,living on an island , in the light of freedom

A very fitting tribute, to those who lost their lives at the site, and to those who witnessed the events of that horrible day.

I found it quite enduring my heart by what had taken place on september 11th, 2001. No human mind can imagine such treacherous act of barbaric can be planed by civilized but since we are living with evil-spirithuman we can not trust no more in human.

Ugliest thing I ever saw. The tower looks a lot like the last piece of the WTC that remained standing for weeks after 9/11. Horrible. Tower looks like an afterthought. It adds nothing of value or interest to the skyline. Some people didn't like the original WTC at first, but I don't think I could ever learn to like the Freedom Tower.

I AM SO HAPPY FOR THE HUMAN KIND FOR WE CAN RAISE AND LOOK UP TO THE SKY AGAIN FROM A NEW TOWER. IT IS LIKE STANDING UP AND SAYING 'HERE WE ARE, AND WE WILL STAND UP TOGETHER AGAIN, LIKE BROTHERS WE ARE, IN THE PATH OF GLORY'.

That is one ugly design. It is clear the architect is trying so hard to build something different, that good taste had to be set aside. The buildings look cheap and the angular construction makes things look like old barns that haven't been maintained and will topple over in the next wind. Yuk.

I have tears in my eyes. The concept it's beautiful and so light. The open space gave me the impression that was like an open heart , still hurt but still pulsing.

The design is beautiful and breathtaking. Reading this article brought back a lot of hurt from the time of the attack.....I hope by the building of this everyone will see that the United States will always stand back up and that when someone tries to hurt us they only bring us closer together.

I Think this will be a great design especially for the people that are still healing, death of a family member takes years to get over. I'm still healing from the loss of my mother so I know this will be a place to set and just relax, and meditate on thoughts of the day. I hope I get a chance to go to NYC and see this wonderful building one day.

I was thunderstruck when I read about the "Wedge of Light". In my opinion this alone is the winning feature for this amazing design! I love it.

Im proud that yet another amazing American landmark is being constructed. Proud that we the American people refuse to live in such fear that we are afraid to continue constructing such amazing monuments. Praise be to God.
