Description by United States Department of Health and Human Services T he headquarters building of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the Hubert H. Humphrey Building, located at the foot of Capitol Hill. The naming of the building in 1977 marked the first time that a federal building had been dedicated to a living person. Hubert Humphrey, who served as U.S. senator from Minnesota and Vice President of the United States, was born in 1911 and died in 1978.
HHS offices housed in the Humphrey Building include the Office of the Secretary and Deputy Secretary; Office of General Counsel; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Legislation; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Budget, Technology and Finance; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation; and the Office of Public Health and Science (Assistant Secretary for Health). In addition, one of HHS' operating divisions, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has headquarters offices in the Humphrey Building.
