W hile the current bridge was built in the mid-14th century, this location has been the main location for crossing the river since the Roman Empire. Like other bridges in Italy, it was re-built at the same location many times. Each time brought more strength, and more uses. By 1345, the bridge was no longer considered a symbol of the city's separation and military defenses. It was all about commerce as butcher shops sprang up hanging on its edges. These were superseded in the 16th century by goldsmiths who could better afford the pricey location in the center of the city.
