Description by Wayne Lorentz T his historic Italian castle is known for its contributions to the world -- great wine, and great explorers.
It is in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, where Chianti wine is produced. The castle also produced Giovanni da Verrazzano, who discovered the bay that would eventually become the home to New York City. The city's longest bridge, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge is named for him.
The history of the castle, itself, is a little murkier. Many details have been lost through the passage of time. It is believed to date back to the Etruscans and the ancient Romans, and was used as a sentinel to watch over the region's vineyards. There are paper documents going back to 1170, but it is believed to have become the property of the Verrazzano family much earlier -- around the seventh century a.d.
