Rating: Three stars. Absolutely loved it!! Been there in 2001 and stayed with some friends in one of the suites. It looked like a mess but both building and employees had so much character! If i ever come back to Chicago i will go back to this place and see what is still left of the magic. If you look for luxury, avoid it.

Rating: Two stars. The first time I stayed at the Tokyo was in 2004. My friend found it by getting her car stuck in a parking garage that closed over night. It was 1am and the Tokyo was the only place she had enough money to stay in. We've been going ever since. It's right downtown in the middle of everything, and you can get a room for 60-70 dollars. The first time I stayed, i was there with 3 other girls in their early 20's, the older man at the counter stopped us and said 'no, no you want the fancy hotel across the street.' we had to convince him we wanted to stay. He took us up and showed us our room before he would accept our money. I guess he expected disgust and complaining from a group of suburban girls dressed to go out to the clubs, but we LOVED it. The building is unique and full of character, I wish I knew more about its history. It's much more exciting than the luxury hotels around it that were thrown up by some mega corporation and all look the same. Of course with adventure comes some drawbacks. We always take our valueables with us when we leave the room, you have to pay in cash, and we generally bring our own bedding, although this past new years eve ('08/'09) I had to stay unexpectedly and safely slept in the bedding provided...and right there's another plus to the Tokyo, no reservations, $60 at 2am on new years...where else in downtown Chicago could we have found that! The place is clean and the staff are friendly. For Chicago, the place is pretty old and rundown, but it's no worse than the numerous half hostel/half hotels that you'll pay a lot more to stay at in San Francisco. It's not for the spoiled or the fussy, but if you're adventurous and you appreciate history and character, I definitely recommend the place!

Rating: One star. Its scary, no doubt. But if you've got a strong stomach and a limited budget, its the coolest place in the city. The suites are much better and I beleive that they are only $115. The bathroom in the west studio is new and fairly clean. Although, a friend who stayed in a regular room had his ipod and a wallet stolen.

Rating: One star. I stayed at this hotel in 2004-09 and thought I wouldn't wake up with both my kidneys. After we had to pay in cash, the Hunchback prepared our room and we took plywood elevators up to the 14th floor. Our room wasn't a nice a most max-security prisons and ... you get the point. Enjoy
