I ncorrectly called the "American Tower" and the "American General Building" by local television anchors, even the ones who work next door at KHOU (channels 11 and 31), this building's proper name is often overlooked. The misnomer stems from the fact that this is the most visible building in a group of structures known as the American General Complex. Situated on Buffalo Bayou a very short distance from downtown, this building has some of the greatest views of downtown, and it's likely to stay that way since the majority of the land seperating the two is made up of parks. The America Tower combines the practical elements of today's skyscrapers with a f ew aesthetic flourishes that allow it to stand out. It adheres to the traditional concrete and glass grid form, but some walls are angled to form curves in the outer skin. This means more great views for the people inside, and a subtly unique appearance to people below.

I once worked on the 14th floor of this wonderful building. I loved the covered walkways that connected it to the other buildings and parking garages on the complex. The views of the parks, Montrose and Buffalo Bayou were wonderful.
