A n example of how a small architectural work can still be more beautiful than other structures twice, or even 100 times its size. This fountain was used by Muslims to wash themselves before they went to pray during the time that the Hagia Sophia served as a mosque. It was erected on the orders of Sultan Mahmud I as part of his larger plan to bring architectural unity to the Hagia Sophia complex.

Though the water no longer flows, streams of tourists gather under its gilded Rococo eaves seeking relief from the sun.
