T his building is something of an oddity in Phoenix. When this city grows, it expands into the vast desert that surrounds it. But this building is a genuine western-style glass-and-brick skyscraper in the midst of a city that seems to accept sprawl as a way of life. It couldn't have come soon enough. Envisioned in the 1960's when the downtown area was being abandoned in favor of suburbs, it took many years to land Valley National Bank as a client to commit to the space and enable construction on the 40-story tower to start. The Bank One center became the catalyst in the 70's for reviving downtown Phoenix. That revitalization was repeated in the late 20th and early 21st centuries with new sports arenas and entertainment complexes.
At the time of its completion, this was the tallest building in Arizona.
