Built: 1956-1969 Renovated: 1995-2006 at a cost of US$79,000,000.00 Type: Bridge Location: Spanning Lake Pontchatrain between New Orleans and Mandeville, New Orleans, United States
O nce considered the longest bridge in the world, its status is being challenged by recent projects in Europe and Asia. Still, the causeway is a marvelous engineering project and a wonder to behold as you drive over it with the blue of the water and the blue of the sky merging in the distance ahead of you. The bridge is 24-miles long, and consists of two parallel decks 80-feet apart each outfitted with two lanes of traffic. The decks are supported by more than 9,000 pilings and joined by seven turnaround zones for emergency vehicles. The Lake Pontchatrain Causeway is a singularly amazing bridge. But it may not be alone for long. A study is underway into whether another bridge is needed to span the lake.
Lake Pontchatrain is named for the Count de Pontchatrain, Louis XIV's finance minister.
An average of 30,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day.

Rating: Five stars. I think this bridge is important because it makes people realize that new orleans is more than just a tourist attraction, and that its no longer stuck in the 18th century. it's one of the largest port cities in the U.S., its a modern buisness center and a great place to grow up, I think more people should move to New Orleans to enhance its sprawling growth. I would strongly recomend moving to New Orleans and using this bridge for that matter

this bridge is amazing. without it people would have to go around a lake the size of rhode island to reach new orleans
