I n a city that lives by the clock and dies by the clock, this clock tower rises above them all. It is a modern, somewhat minimalist interpretation of the classic skyscraper spire we've seen in New York's Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, but with Asian taste. In some ways, it resembles a 1950's robotic version of a Gothic bell tower complete with right-angled flying buttresses marking the transition from the main shaft to the spire setbacks. The DoCoMo tower stands just to the south of Shinjuku's busy transportation district, with its clock facing the hundreds of thousands of commuters who pass through the neighborhood each day. That timepiece was added to the tower in 2002 to mark the company's tenth anniversary. It is 492 feet above the ground. Though at certain angles the building can appear to be part of the Shinjuku skyline, it is actually on its own to the south of the bulk of the local skyscrapers.
