O ne of the larger, more impressive buildings in the Millennium Water project, 151 Athletes Way is the little brother of 181 Athletes Way next door. Both buildings take the shape of a bloated trapezoid, with a facade of alternating bands of glass and reflective steel occasionally interrupted by vertical channels of balconies. The buildings' roof lines step down toward the waters of False Creek, affording some of the residences magnificent views while preserving light and air flow for the buildings behind.
However, there are differences.
151's orientation is askew in relation to the rest of the street grid. This allows it to take full advantage of light, breezes, and views from the east that would otherwise be partially blocked by other buildings in the complex. At the same time it provides a little extra privacy in what, in spite of appearances, is a dense urban setting.
By going off the street grid, the designers had the opportunity to include a triangular park on its eastern side, and a pair of trapezoidal water features on the west.

This building was part of the athletes' residence complex for the 2010 Winter Games, officially known as "2010 Olympic and Paralympic Village Vancouver."
January 14, 2003: This was revealed in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic bid book to be the location of the athletes' village.
April 4, 2006: Millennium Development won the bid for this project.
March 10, 2007: Groundbreaking on the project which includes this building.
November 1, 2009: This building was turned over to the Vancouver Organizing Committee for use at athlete and official housing for the 2010 winter games.
July 1, 2010: New permanent residents move in.
This building meets LEED Gold guidelines.
Rainwater is collected and stored for irrigating the landscaping during dry months.
There is a system to harvest heat from the sewers.
This building has a green roof.
Windows and balconies have been angled to take advantage of natural cooling breezes.
This building has been oriented to take advantage of natural light and reduce electric needs.
