B uilt as a companion building to the BC Place complex next door, Vancouver Convention Centre does a fine job standing on its own as both a functional building and an impressive piece of architecture.

The building's long lines and jutting prow are a nod to the cruise ships and other marine traffic that ply the busy waterway that is Vancouver Harbour. The building's angles and curves pay homage to the wave action, and play with both natural light and reflected light in a way that mimics water. In the right light, the building looks "wet," as if it had just hauled itself up on shore.

Appropriately, this building's connection to the sea isn't its only link to nature. While 40% of the building is over water, 60% is over land, and the connection to that heritage is made visually through the use of a series of green roofs planted with native plants and grasses. Taking the gardening motif one step further, the facility has its own beehives, and a staff beekeeper.

This is the international broadcast center for the 2010 Winter Olympic games.
