A lthough the international airport at Montevideo has been open since 1947, the part of the airport that most people see is more recent -- opened in 2009.
The airport's main terminal (also known as the "new terminal") was built from 2007 to 2009. It came about after the formerly government-owned facility was privatized in 2003. An airport improvement fee was used to raise money for the spacious, modern new terminal.
That terminal is expressed as a massive arc across the southeast portion of the airport. Low to the ground and very smooth, it mimics the look of a 1,200-foot-long wing in flight. Both the land and air side make use of wide expanses of glass walls to enhance the sense of space, movement, and possibility. The roof's structural supports are minimized so it appears to hover over the departure hall like an airship.
As it is now, the terminal is designed to handle up to three million passengers a year. But with the addition of new jetways it can handle up to six million a year.
