I t's not very often in the United States that a broadcasting company makes an impact on architecture. Sure, it's common in places like Germany and France. In New York, the National Broadcasting Company's home is made in the landmark Rockefeller Plaza, but that was an afterthought. Portland's KOIN Center was designed and built with the intention of housing broadcast studios. Since its construction, the tower has been a continuous public relations and advertising icon in the city, and an ambassador of goodwill in its skyline. Its most distinguishing feature is its pyramid top.

The pyramid top reminds me of the Key Tower in Cleveland. The KOIN TV station has a camera on the top of the pyramid. The shots they get are amazing. I think it should have been taller. The KOIN Center has a very pleasing shape and is a heck of a lot better to look at than the Wells Fargo Center (PDX's tallest building) a few blocks away.
