O ne of the more famous of Rhode Island’s public mansions, The Breakers was the summer getaway for the Vanderbilt family. This is not actually the first house on this site. The original Breakers was a simple wooden home which burned down after the Vanderbilt family purchased the estate. It was Cornelius Vanderbilt II who commissioned the villa we see today. "Villa" is appropriate term, because the building is heavily influenced by Italian architectural styles, and features 70 rooms
