L ike all Dzongs this place serves both as a religious outpost and as a fortress against attackers. Notable for its brightly colored roof, the Tongsa Dzong is perched on the rim of the valley guarding the city below. It's a natural setting in which to raise and train a future leader, and the people of Bhutan have been doing that for hundreds of years. The city is at the center of the kingdom, and it is from here that the leader traditionally is chosen, first becoming Penlop (governor) of Trongsa before being named Crown Prince and eventually King.
