T he building itself is a boring block of gray rock. In the 1960's it was a very modern and chic view of the future. But belying the exterior is a single wonder on the interior -- the archives. Four stories containing 1,500,000 documents the former president collected while in office.

Quotations
"I hope that visitors who come here will achieve a closer understanding of the Presidency, which affects their own lives greatly. I hope that those who shared in the history of this time will remember it and see it in perspective, and that the young people who come here will get a clearer comprehension of what this Nation tried to do in an eventful period of its history."

I have visited this museum and it is one of the most magnificent of all the presidential libraries and an impressive example of the international style. It is massive and very austere, but it is placed in a perfect setting on a university campus surrounded by complimentary structures. Though the exterior is devoid of ornamentation, one realizes upon entering how truly grand the building is. The atrium is massive, yet supremely clean and sweeping. The archive boxes and books on the upper floors, which are visible from the atrium floor are in matching red and gold coverings, which gives the feeling of rhythm and harmony and order. The staircase is magnificent. I was truly impressed. The Bush Library just a few miles away in College Station is perhaps a lovelier building externally, but can't match the Johnson's interior spaces.

It seems to be a fitting monument to L.B.J's Texas-Sized ego.
