I f you're looking for a warm, fuzzy image for your corporation -- this isn't it. This building was intended to look like a telephone at the top. And the decorative bridge that supports the company's logo does in some way resemble the receiver of a telephone in its cradle. But the addition of a pair of illuminated spires ruins the image. You can imagine bolts of electricity arcing between them on a stormy night. But most people just call it the "Batman Building" because it resembles the helmet worn by the comic book hero. When South Central Bell commissioned the building, they wanted a landmark, and for better or worse – mission accomplished. In spite of the criticism, this skyscraper was exactly what Nashville needed: a signature piece to make it look at home in the international community. The tower would look perfectly normal in Luala Lumpur, or Frankfurt; in fact, it might even be lost in those cities. But in Nashville it elevates the whole city and its skyline by saying, "Yes, we are modern" to a world that associates Tennessee more with twang than technology. And while the upper reaches of the building reinforce that modern image, the lower levels of glass and stone grid blend in with the rest of the city at the pedestrian level. When viewed looming over the city's main drag in the small hours of the morning, the building is a reminder to the people stumbling out of the honky-tonks that the future is near, and they'd better go home and rest up.

  • At the time of its completion, this was the tallest building in Tennessee.

Quotations
“The BellSouth Tower, at the time we did that they wanted a signature piece of architecture. What happens inside the building drives the way the outside looks.”

The Batman building is the tallest in Tennessee in terms of feet, but it is not the building with the most floors in Tennessee. That distinction goes to the 100 N Main building in Memphis.

I live in Nashville and have for many years and absolutely love this building. I was fortunate enough to be on the top floor after Al Gore's celebration party when he was running for President.Nashville is a terrific city with great people who truly love where they live. I think the Batman building as we call it echoes that sentiment as well.

I like the way the building was designed. I like how it compliments the skyline of Nashville, also in books and on souvenirs. I wish to see it someday.

I am from Tennessee and my mother works for Bell South. My daughter saw her first fireworks (1 1/2 years old at the time) from the wonderful height, she thought they were there just for her and she tried to reach out and touch them. She laughed and squealed every time one burst in the dark sky over the river. A very wonderful memory for myself and my family. My son (16 now) thinks that his grandmother works at the "coolest" place around.

I went to college near Nashville in the 1970s, when the only really tall buildings were the classic International Style L&C Tower and that insurance company blockhouse thing. The BellSouth Building gives Nashville an iconic structure for the 21st century that will look futuristic for many years to come.

As a Nashvillian and a BellSouth employee i am very proud of this building! Living here all of my life, i can remeber when Nashville (Nashvegas to locals) was in a semi-decline. Along with the "Arena", the "Coliseum" (Home of the Tennessee Titans), The Batbuilding was exactly what the city needed to spark our rebirth as a conflux of history and all things American. Here is to my beautiful Nashville!!

I am from Nashville and love the "Batman Building". I wish that it was only a little taller and that they would play with the lighting scheme at night, i.e. different colors. I also wish Nashville would build more modern structures like this, however it does go hand in hand with our arena. And for the record, it still is the tallest building in Tennessee.

I give it a 5. It defines my city. I love the architecture, and was amazed at the architect too. I have had the chance to interview him, and he is as unique as his amazing structure. When people think of downtown Nashville, they think of the "Batman Building."

One night, my family and I were driving back to Columbus and we went through Nashville. I suddenly saw this building that looked like it was yawning. I had images in my head since then and downloaded a few pictures and gave the building a face. Today, I couldn't figure out why someone would need to criticize it. I would like to see it again if we go to Nashville.
