I n a city where religion is serious business, you’d better have a serious church. Christ Church Cathedral is a great example of important religious architecture. Its downtown location reflects its import as the seat of the Episcopal diocese. Its sandstone exterior adds gravitas to a church that is the cornerstone of the faith in the area. Appropriately, it has an asymmetrical bell tower which also houses the entry, and a very nice rose window that allows light to stream into the sanctuary. But best of all, it has something few churches do these days – gargoyles! Unusual for the late 19-th century, and even more unusual in the middle of America, these grotesques provide a symbolic link to the mother church founded long ago far away.

Christ Church, nashville, the church and city in which I grew up. I still worship there on visits home from the UK where I have lived for 30 years.
