Description by Chris Cousins of Urban Ohio.
R oebling Suspension Bridge, built in 1867, is one of the earliest suspension bridges in the country. A known prototype of the Brooklyn Bridge and designed by the bridge's namesake John A. Roebling, the bridge spans the Ohio River, connecting downtown Cincinnati to downtown Covington, Kentucky. The sandstone bridge was a main thoroughfare from getting from the south to the north and was a key factor for former-slave migration into the north.

  • At the time of its completion, this was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
  • When the bridge opened, a toll was collected on the Ohio side. The money wen to the State of Kentucky to help pay off its debt.
  • December, 1866 - The bridge opens to pedestrians.
  • January, 1867 - The bridge opens to vehiclar traffic.
  • 1896 - The bridge's color is changed from brown to blue. Some time later, it is changed again to green.
  • 1953 - The bridge is purchased by the State of Kentucky for $4,230,000.00.
  • 1963 - The toll booths are removed, and the bridge becomes free to transit.
  • 1975 - The bridge is added to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • 1980 - The bridge's color is changed back to blue.
  • 1984 - Decorative lights are added to the suspension cables.
  • 2005 - The bridge's color is changed to beige.

Correction, the bridge was nor painted beige in 2005. It just reopened today after being repainted blue (11/5/10) it has never been beige...at least not in the past 38 years. Also you need to add The Ascent (architect Daniel Libeskind) as a nearby important building. its less than a half block away http://www.yourascent.com/. Thanks!
