I f you want history to remember your name, you have to do something very important that affects a lot of people. This is the case with Onofrio della Cava, who built this fountain in the mid-15th century. It is the terminus of an aqueduct that funnels water from a source 12 miles away, and routes it into the heart of Dubrovnik. It also presents it in style, with an ornamental mask on each of its 16 sides, serving as spigots. They let the water flow into a collection trough below. As magnificent as this fountain is, it used to be much better. It was heavily damaged in the earthquake of 1667, and some of its ornamentation was never repaired.
