Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche)
Also known as: The Hole in the Tooth Built: 1891-1895 Designed by: Franz Schwechten Renovated: 1963 by Egon Eirmann Type: Holy Place Maximum Height: 223 feet / 68 meters Location: Breitscheidplatz, Berlin, Germany
A monument to destruction and rebirth, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church) today recalls a violent past while looking firmly toward the future. The church was consecrated in 1895 and was well regarded within Berlin. It was erected by Kaiser Wilhelm II to honor his father, Kaiser Wilhelm, and as a symbol of Prussian unity. But it was a 1943 bombing raid by Allied forces during the Second World War that turned this church into a landmark. The bombs only left the front tower standing. The rest of the church was destroyed. Instead of pulling the rest down, or fixing it up as was done in other cities, the remaining church tower was stabilized and made into a monument. In 1963, a new church was built. A spectacularly modern octagon of blue glass with an accompanying hexagonal glass monolith of a bell tower. Today the old and the new stand side-by-side and are one of the city's greatest landmarks.

Rating: Four stars. I love the city, the beautiful buildings and the history in Berlin. I love the old section of the church and it is enjoyable to see what it looked like before WWII. The building reminds one of what war can do and is a great memorial, but the new church is hidious.

Rating: Five stars. in germany the buildings are a mirror to the soul-you love the building including this that made it,including this that invite it, including these that attended it,for their values and world vision.the german esthetic is remarkable also for these practical applications, and not only for the abstract aesthetic values of the buildings.
