A lovely bright red brick church in the heart of Berlin, St.-Marien-Kirche traces its heritage back almost to the city's founding, as one of its two original parish churches. Over the centuries, the neighborhood where the church is located changed from commercial to residential, and as new buildings were built, many of the significant ones tried to blend in with the historic church by using similar brick.

  • 1270 - Construction begins.
  • 1380 - The church is seriously damaged in a fire.
  • 1400~ - A new bell tower is completed.
  • 1485 - The fresco "Dance of the Dead" is completed inside the church.
  • 1730 - "Dance of the Dead" is covered over and forgotten in time.
  • 1860 - "Dance of the Dead" is found again and restored.
