Description by Alberto E.
T he monastery of Suso arose from the caves inhabited by Saint Millán and his disciples in the 6th century. The Suso monastery was completed in the 10th century. It has visigothic, mozarabian and romanesque features. In the cloister they are the tombs of the seven Infants of Lara, their ayo and those of three queens of Navarre. San Millán de la Cogolla is a small town together with both monasteries. Suso, or "Upper" and Yuso or "Lower." In 1997 both were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, in part because this is considered the birthplace of the Castilian or Spanish Language.
