N ot a large church by European standards, but with a large impact of the region, Saint Mark's Church stands as an enduring symbol of the importance of religion in life. As with many churches, the history of the area is reflected in the structure. This is most notably displayed in the coats of arms on its roof. They represent Zagreb, and the kingdom of Croatia-Dalmatia-Slavonia. Zagreb is the oldest of them, and is marked by a reproduction of a stone engraved with the date 1499. The original stone has been safely tucked away at a museum. Also note the southern entrance. This was built by Prague's Parler family in the late 1800's. It features 15 statues – the 12 apostles, Jesus, Mary, and Saint Mark.
