Russia's
historic influence in the region is demonstrated through
this building. The Uspensky Cathedral is built in
the Greek Orthodox tradition, by Russian architect
Aleksei Gornostaev. Unlike western churches which
usually feature drag grey or white façades, it is
not uncommon for Russian churches to be blazing red,
with gold or blue accents. In this case, a gold onion
dome, the very icon of Russian churches around the
world, fits the bill.
