The Buildings of Batman Begins
An Architectural Tour Behind the Scenes of Chicago as Gotham City

Helicopters

The helicopter work done to make this film was stunning. It's a shame that movie-goers won't get to see the best stunt flying. That's because the best work was done by the pilot of the camera chopper. It managed to thread between tight buildings, hover rock steady, and closely follow the Gotham chopper with amazing precision. The Gotham Police helicopter is just as generic as the Gotham police cruisers. It is gray with a white "Police" marked on the side. The camera helicopter is red with a round protrusion on the front housing the actual camera. The prop police helicopter mostly splashed light around the area when it was being filmed from the second chopper. Once filming resumed from the roofs of nearby buildings, a searchlight mounted on a crane was used in its sted. With two helicopters operating in such tight quarters, people who lived in the area were kept off the streets in case something bad happened.

Warner Brothers must not be all that interested in hiding the choppers, since they parked them in a field behind a McDonald's on Addison. A zoom lens reveals the Gotham City seal on the side of the police helicopter.

The police helicopter is N450CC - a 1983 Aerospatiale AS250 B2, serial number 1682, owned by Vision Air of Costa Mesa, California.

The camera helicopter is N350SC - a 1997 Eurocopter AS350 B2, serial number 1408, owned by South Coast Helicopters in Costa Mesa, California.

Thanks to a Carl Zeiss zoom lens, we can make out the Gotham logo on the side of the chopper.

The camera chopper got way too close to a number of buildings.

Closer still.

You can get a sense of how close the helicopter is to the building by looking at the size of the spectators in the parking garage.
