The Batmobile
This car has become a familiar sight to people in Chicago watching the evening news. Most TV stations in Chicago (and Superstation WGN for those of you elsewhere in North America) have shown videotape of the car whizzing down Lower Wacker Drive being chased by Gotham Police Department cars. In at least one case, there was a person, presumably a stunt man, standing on one of the cars as it raced down the twisty underground street. These photos represent the end of a chase scene where Gotham police cars (marked with GPD Police on the side) chase the Batmobile up the spiral of the Randolph and Lake Parking Garage and onto the roof. Our hero's car stops between two other cars (you can see how it's much wider than a regular car) and is trapped by GPD squads. With no where to turn, the Batmobile rushes the police blockade, fires rockets, passes the police cars, jumps through the hole made in the faux concrete wall by the rockets, and through the miracle of special effects, we can presume that the Batmobile plunges off the side of the garage, but ends up O.K. Special effects are also needed for the rockets. No rockets were fired in the filming, but the fake wall had to be blown up several times to get just the right effect. Later takes involved the Batmobile rushing through the already blown-up wall where a small ramp was placed, presumably to make it seem like the car was jumping off the building. In reality, the wall is fake and the actual prop car hits a soft cushion against the real wall. This scene was filmed probably 20 times -- 10 times from the air and another ten from the roof of the garage. Return to the main Buildings of Batman page. Return to Glass Steel and Stone home page.
