The Buildings of Batman Begins
An Architectural Tour Behind the Scenes of Chicago as Gotham City

William Rowney Building
225 West Lake

Ordinarily this building isn't anything special. But when the production of Batman Begins came to town it became the scene of a chase. On its roof is a series of HVAC ducts. It was on these that a scene was filmed where Batman is being chased by a police officer. The officer shouts, "Stop! Police!" A shot is fired, and Batman leaps off the roof. In reality, the stunt man only fell about 10 feet onto a giant cushion on the roof of the neighboring building. But with a little Hollywood magic, it could be a good scene. It appears that this scene is supposed to take place in winter because the special effects people put several devices on the roof to create plumes of steam rising into the air. They also added a small radio tower with a red and a green light to the roof, perhaps to make the building seem taller.

An improbable number of people crowd onto the roof of the building for filming. In the entourage are a dozen or so young blonde women who should have been wearing more clothing. Possibly movie groupies, since they weren't allowed near the cameras.
