Spring in NY on 57th Street
by Evangeline Avlonitis

Three little black girls in stripes and lace
outside the church all full of grace
and spunk
run to the subway grate
and puff up their dresses like birthday cakes
puff up
with elbows cocked and spindly knees
they giggle gleefully
mischeviously
squawking, they stirke a pose
their dresses rise higher
and begin to expose
their frilly undergarments
then mom gives a yell
their dresses sway like bells
in the Sunday sun
yet defiantly
they stand on the grill
watching their Sunday dresses
rise
to God's eyes
what a thrill!
