untitled
by Evangeline Avlonitis

Unexpected Thing
A bright yellow orange interlude
tossed in early summer
whether haphazardly or with loving intention
the unexpected thing
zucchini blossoms city sing
In a tree pit no bigger than your
outstretched arms
zucchini leaves like summer hats
create broad brimfuls of cool shade
for tightly twirled blossoms
ready to unfurl at any moment
As summer opens uptown on a hot block on 110th street
the zucchini does not differentiate
through the dry, arid city soil
it sings summer
bursting alongside the ancient
gingko
laughingly
heralding the onset of summer
for anyone who cares to notice
how a handful of seeds and a treepit
can transform a soul
