Boston wants new skyscraper
Feb 18, 2006, 20:15 GMT

BOSTON, MA, United States (UPI) -- Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino is calling for a 70- to 80-story skyscraper that would be about 1,000 feet high and the tallest building in the city.

Officials are inviting proposals for the site at the Winthrop Square parking garage in the financial district -- to demonstrate Boston`s confidence in its future, the mayor said at a speech Friday to business leaders at the Seaport Hotel.

While the 1,000-foot tall tower would be the tallest building in Boston, it would be far shorter than the 1,250-foot-high Empire State Building in New York City and the 1,450-foot Sears Tower in Chicago, the Boston Globe reported Saturday.

'We`ll be looking for proposals that symbolize the full scope of this city`s greatness,' Menino said. 'We will insist on bold vision and world-class architecture.'

It's about time. Boston's skyline is pathetic for its size.

Yeah they really need a new building. I like how everyone uses the word steroids with a city. It's kind of funny. Anyways, I really think Boston should do something with their skyline because they are staying way behind in terms of a Skyline.

I'm OK with a city that doesn't have lots of skyscrapers. Vienna and Montreal come to mind. But it has to be made up for with lots of interesting neighborhoods, or good low-scale architecture. Boston doesn't have much of this, either. Architecture tourims brings in millions of dollars each year for cities like New York and Chicago. Other cities need to realize that how they look matters.

Hmm you're completely correct. It would just be really nice seeing a tall skyscraper in Boston.

What about everything going on with the "Big Dig"? I saw how the project was having major problems since it has been finished. Cracking and collapsing under pressure. One lady was unfortunate enough to have a huge chunk of concrete crush her in one of the tunnels. Did the "Big Dig" disrupt the overall support for downtown Boston, physically speaking?

Oh wow I didn't know about that. Can you show me a picture of the building so that I can see what you're talking about?

Well no buildings have been damaged to my knowledge. The "Big Dig" is the massive underground transportation system that Boston used billions of dollars of Federal money on. Now the tunnels are breaking apart and debris is falling onto the roadways. They also built a new bridge, but I think that is fine.

I think you're right -- people in Boston may be construction-weary after the Big Dig. Didn't it take something like ten years to complete?

Mayn thanks indeed. Upon discovering your article, I immediately compared your recommendations to my standard settings.1. "Mpeg2 Deblocking"I always enable it for MPEG2-content. Do you have negative experiences with that option?2. "you all know how I feel about resizing"Actually, I dont know it ;-) After cropping, I am using the "suggest resolution (mod16)" option. If meGUI suggests e.g., "640 instead of "720 I "hope" that it says that 720 would not add quality but only increase file size. Is that correct?I understand that your suggestion is to leave the resolution an to use the "CAM" to achieve mod16.3. "Clever ™ Anamorphic Encoding"If I do it as described in 2., I have mod16 resolutions. Nevertheless, should I use one of the "CAM"-options in addition?4. "Clever ™ Anamorphic Encoding"I have read many articles about "anamorphic" videos but still havent understood it and therefore leave it off. Is there a rule to know when a movie is anamorphic? (Most of my source material is simple captured TV-signal, therefore I dont have much experience witn complex DVDs or BDs)Greetings, Frank ipod to pc transfer Top PowerPoint presentation once the video is installed on your computer, run it, and then click Add to import the converted PowerPoint file.
