It's hard to believe, but there's actually a gargoyle in the shape of Darth Vader from Star Wars on the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Those wacky Catholics!
Here's a picture: ![]() Here's a link to the official cathedral document about it. |

QUOTE(editor @ Mar 31 2007, 09:13 AM) It's hard to believe, but there's actually a gargoyle in the shape of Darth Vader from Star Wars on the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. Those wacky Catholics! Here's a picture: ![]() Here's a link to the official cathedral document about it. I was quite happy to discover your post since architectural sculpture is what brought me to this site and your Darth Vadar is a great example. However, as a serious researcher {I can hear my kids snickering from miles away 'Dad, serious?" giggle, giggle giggle) I feel a need to point out that the National Cathedral is NOT a Roman Catholic church. It was built, and is maintained, used, etc. by the The Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation. For almost a centruy the cathedral grounds sported a snone yard in which, among things, gargoyles and grotesques and a wide variety of scuptural ornamentation were produced. Folks could donate to the cathedral building and get a gargoyle carved for them. This is likely (my opinion) how Darth Vadar came to be. eeeeeeek |

I can honestly say, that is the most odd type of building adornment I've heard of. Some architects need to get out more.

If it iany consolation, it is not likely that an architect had anything to do with that caring, and as far as letting stone carvers out, they're pretty much still trying to lock them all up. Darth Vadar actually (ie "my opinion") fits into a thousand year old tradition of carving EVIL stuff on cathedrals. Some of the scenes of the Last Judgment, for example on European churches make Darth Vadar seem like Smurf. EInar

True. I've seen some absolutely vulgar things carved into European churches.

The Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation, under the leadership of the nine Bishops of Washington, erected the cathedral under a charter passed by the United States Congress on January 6, 1893. Construction began on September 29, 1907, when the foundation stone was laid in the presence of President Theodore Roosevelt and a crowd of more than 20,000, and ended 83 years later when the last finial was placed in the presence of President George H. W. Bush in 1990.
