It fluctuates with the season, depending on the levels of oxygen and limestone released by Lake Michigan. For Saint Patrick's Day they dye the main channel (the part you see in all of the photos except the first one) green, but the green you see in those photos is natural.
The camera I use has an RGBE chip, so it's a little more sensitive to blues and greens than most, but I didn't change the colors at all in any of the pictures except the second one. In the Autumn there is a natural even called the "whiting" of the lake, where temperature inversions in the water cause dissolved limestone from the bottom to rise to the top. It can be seen as long white streaks across the lake from airplanes. If you've ever been to deep deep northern Canada and seen the perfectly pure water pond as it comes off a glacier, you'll notice that it's green, not blue. Water turns blue when the level of dissolved oxygen in it increases through biological activity. Too much activity, and it turns brown and nasty. So, in short, from my three years of looking out my window at the river and the lake, that green is its natural color, as unnatural as it may seem. |

You're so lucky. Chicago is my favorite city and like a second home to me. I'd give anything to live right there in the middle of it all.
Nice photos, thanks for sharing. |

It's a nice place when times are good, but things have been going downhill lately because of the recession. A lot of the annual festivals and events have been cancelled, trash cleanup and basic maintenance has been reduced, and unemployment is 11% in the county, and said to be much higher in the city. If you do visit, wait a few years until things rebound. It will be a wonderful place then. |
