The Chicago City Council's zoning committee approved the spire.

Next step: Full city council approval. It's on the May 9th agenda. In spite of the latest election, Mayor Daley still appears to have an iron grip on the city council, so I expect this to go through. Especially since hizzonor desperately wants this for the Olympic bid.

The Trib says the developer is talking about caisson work in May or June, which means topping off well before the Olympic decision in 2009. I bet Daley would LOVE to have this giant icon on the lakefront in his proposal videos.

There was a blurb on WGN-TV the other night about how a lane or two of Lake Shore Drive is now closed to build the entrance and exit ramps to the Spire. So much for the Sun-Times continuing to call this a "proposed" project.
