Istana Negara
Built: 1928
Also known as: Istana Alam Shah
Formerly: Chan Wing Residence
Type: Government Building
Type: Residential
Location: Jalan Istana at Jalan Syed Putra

A popular tourist destination, this palace is the official home of the King and Queen of Malaysia. It's kind of hard to see from the road because the building sits on a 28-acre plot of land on a hill overlooking the river, and surrounded by a high fence. But it's worth the trip to see the ceremonial changing of the guard; a relic from the time when this land was part of the British Empire. The building dates from the 1920's when it was built by a wealthy Chinese businessman as his personal residence. The mansion has changed hands since then, but remains as magnificent as the day it was built.
