Auckland Ferry Building
Built: 1912
Designed by: Alex Wiseman
Renovated: 1986-1988
Cost: £67,944
Type: Transportation facility
Location: 99 Quay Street

This structure serves as the centerpiece of harbor activity in Auckland. Built in 1912, it still serves as an active ferry terminal thanks, in part, to a major renovation project in the 1980’s. The structure stands on reclaimed ground on a granite base. The building, itself, is sandstone and brick. In a curious turn of events, there was no official opening ceremony for the ferry building when it was completed in the early 20th century. To make up for the oversight, a formal ceremony was held after its renovation in 1988.

  • 1912 - Construction is completed.
  • 1986 - Renovation begins.
  • 1988 - Renovation completed.
  • 5 November, 1988 - Ferry building officially opens.
