T his building stands out because it is surrounded by low, warehouse-type buildings, vacant lots, and a park. Architecturally, it is anything but striking. It’s another black-and-white striped building, and a pretty short one at that. It’s most interesting attribute is the slice taken out of the top. But while the building is not significant, the company is. This is the corporate headquarters of Belo, the oldest company in Texas. It was founded in 1842 when Texas was an independent country. Back then it was simply the Daily News in Galveston, but over the years has transformed itself into a mid-sized player in national media with a collection of newspapers, television stations, and cable news channels. In fact, the Belo building sits across the street from three of its properties -- the flagship Dallas Morning News, WFAA television, and the TXCN 24-hour cable news channel all of which occupy much rougher offices.
