One
of the few buildings on Red Square that is actually
red, the State Historical Museum is the primary repository
for artifacts of Russia's past. Its design echoes
the onion domes that litter the city as well as the
towers of the Kremlin. It is a perfect example of
Russian architecture. Stern, but not severe. Graceful,
but not whimsical. Elegant, but not flashy. Strong,
yet welcoming. Interestingly, its construction was
part of a larger plan to revitalize the city center.
