L ike the city’s other great museum, the Field Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago is housed in a building whose majesty is only surpassed by the depth of the collection inside. Columns, arches, and a grand staircase make sure visitors know this is an important building. Those who don’t know will be eaten by the lion statues guarding the entrance. This grand building was erected for the World’s Columbian Exposition, which did more to shape Chicago’s architectural destiny than Donald Trump ever will. It has undergone no fewer than 11 additions, renovations, and restorations to make it what it is today.
