Paramount Theater
Built: 1930
Designed by: Timothy Pflueger
Type: Entertainment venue

This is one of the last great movie houses to be built in the United States. It's art deco facade greeted millions of guests and thousands of celebrities in its heyday. Later, it fell into a state of disrepair and was ignored for many years. Then in 1973, it was restored to its original splendor and given a new purpose. The Paramount is now home to the Oakland Ballet, and once again visitors gaze upon the eighty-foot mosaic before entering -- an experience likened to plunging into a dark, rich world of light merging with velvet and gold.
