While
the tourist focus of France for the last hundred years
has been the Eiffel Tower, the icon plays a mercifully
minor role here. Yes, it exists as a shrunken replica
best seen from across the lagoon, but the French have
instead chosen to direct their attention to French
culture, and have done a wonderful job. From an architectural
standpoint, the buildings mirror those that would
line a street in Paris down to the last detail. And
the passageway between the La Signature and Plume
et Palette stores is designed to look like the city's
now-famous Metro stations. Most people will miss the
brilliance of the landscaping, which was taken from
the painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island
of La Grande Jutte" by Georges Seurat. The illusion
is nearly complete thanks to poor service in the gift
shops, just like in France, except the people in Florida
aren't nearly rude enough.
