This
is the old Central Railroad of New Jersey train station
and ferry terminal. Commuters from Manhattan would
take the ferry across the river to meet their trains
which ran regular commuter routes throughout New Jersey,
as well as long-distance journeys to Chicago, Washington,
DC, and Philadelphia. The last train departed in 1954.
Most of the immigrants who passed through Ellis Island
boarded trains here to start new lives in the new
world. Now this is an oasis in a run-down industrial
zone that has been reclaimed as Liberty State Park.
Inside the station you can buy a ferry ticket to Ellis
Island or the Statue of Liberty.
