This
is an unusual sight in the United States where the
concept of "freedom of religion" is often interpreted
as "freedom from religion." It is a square
in the center of downtown Dallas that serves as meditation
space. Not just for contemplation, but for actual
spiritual healing. Most cities throw up a few fountains
and consider it a rejuvenation for the soul. But this
place -- through signs, murals, and sculpture -- challenges
you to take active steps with your life to become
a better person. A short path of has different stations
with plaques that make you think about your life.
They are arranged in a spiral, and once you've passed
all of the stations, you may continue through a giant
ring toward the bell tower. The bells toll every day
at noon. If that's not enough for you, there is also
a spiral-shaped chapel that offers interfaith services.
It's nice that Dallas hasn't forgotten that it was
founded by deeply religious people who saw their faith
as an integral part of their lives. That makes Dallas
unique among modern American cities.
