This
is not strictly a "dome" in the way the Astrodome
is a dome, or the Millennium Dome is a dome, but it
is an enclosed sports and entertainment arena, much
like the other non-round "domes" in the world. This
one uses four towers supporting steel cables to keep
the roof aloft while at the same time preserving sight
lines for as many seats as possible. It is used for
basketball, hockey, football, conventions, and trade
shows.
- 25
December, 2001 - A light bulb is blamed for a fire
that caused US$100,000.00 damage to the Alamodome.
The bulb in a storage area broke, sending hot fragments
raining down on an old disassembled basketball court.
Trivia
from the Alamodome web site:
- The
roof support towers are 300 feet tall.
- The
lowest part of the ceiling is 125 feet above floor
level.
- There
are 13 miles of pipe for each ice rink.
- The
backup generators can put out 3,750,000 kilowatts
of energy.
- There
are 961 doors in the Alamodome.
- There
are 88 rest rooms.
- There
are 672,000 paving bricks in the plaza surrounding
the building.

"Whereas
the Alamodome beats Dallas' Cotton Bowl stadium
hands down, the new home for the GalleryFurniture.com
Bowl next season is Houston's new Reliant Stadium.
The retractable-roof dome, which will also be
home to Houston's new NFL Texans franchise, is
a beauty. If there is one thing Houston hates
to be, it's second to San Antonio."
