Mission Espada is the farthest away from San Antonio and in spite of its proximity to a freeway, it is a tranquil oasis relatively free from the cacophony of the Alamo. Most tourists don't make it this far down the Mission Trail, but the adventurous are rewarded for making the trip. Like most of the other missions, this is an active church open to visitors. The narrow sanctuary features simple wooden pews and welcoming bilingual church bulleting reflective of the congregation. Closing ones eyes brings a sense of peace and the ability to imagine what this place was like in the 18th century.

  • 1690 - Mission is founded in East Texas as San Francisco de los Tejas. 1731 - Mission moves to its present location. 10 November, 1978 - Becomes part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
  • A spirit in the form of a huge vicious dog is said to roam the grounds and menace visitors. This same spirit form has been reported at other San Antionio mission sites.
