Mission
San José is one of the most impressive structures
in San Antonio’s mission collection. It has been preserved
in a wonderful state and even some of the paintings
on the outside can be clearly seen. The complex is
huge and gives a good sense of the fortress function
these refuges sometimes served. To this day, masses
are still held inside along with weddings and other
ceremonies. Don’t overlook the small cemetery just
outside the main entrance. It’s only a handful of
graves, but lends a mystique to the scene that is
essential. The most famous detail of the mission is
the legendary Rose Window. Its intricately carved,
reflecting the dedication and craftsmanship of the
people who built the missions.
Some say on moonlit nights the image of a Franciscan
monk can be seen walking the mission grounds. Some
say they have seen him headless.
The ghost of an elderly parishoner is said to sometimes
talk to people in the church.
